Members of the Association

The British School in The Netherlands is organised as an Association (vereniging) established under Dutch law, as a not-for-profit organisation. The Association is governed by its Articles of Association, which are deposited at the Kamer van Koophandel at Den Haag.

The Association has a maximum of 35 members who are individuals, appointed by the general meeting of the Association. Eligibility for membership of the Association is subject to unanimous nomination of all members of the Nominating Committee (which comprises of 3 members drawn from the Association).

Members of the Association are drawn from three distinct groups being employer organisations whose employees have children at School, special interest groups, such as organisations in The Netherlands and independents who have no affiliation to the former.

The School is managed by the Board of Governors, of which there are eight. Six of these are appointed by the general meeting of the Association and two are appointed by the Chair of the Association, His Excellency The British Ambassador. One is the Governor Parental Interests who has been nominated by the Governor Parental Interest Nominating Committee (with nomination open to all BSN Parents under recently adopted new rules), the other at the Ambassador's discretion.

The Board of Governors are responsible for management of the Association and are appointed for a term of 4 years terminating on the 4th Anniversary of the Annual General Meeting, which appointed them. The Association meets twice a year, in January when the Annual General Meeting adopts the Annual Accounts and receives the report of the Board of Governors and in June to review the annual budget for the forthcoming year.

In addition to the appointment of the Board of Governors the meeting of the Association has the right of approval over contracts to acquire, dispose of or encumber registered property (such as real estate) and in respect of the Board of Governors seeking to incur a single expenditure exceeding 10% of the Associations total income during the previous Association year.
