Fundraising Frenzy at the BSN

previous next

Every year in November the BSN joins in the fun of the BBC ‘Children In Need’ Appeal. Here in Holland, whilst supporting the concept and making a donation to the BBC appeal, we also look towards a local deserving cause.

For the last 5 years the BSN has chosen the ‘Ronald McDonald Kinderfonds’ as its main charity on ‘Children In Need’ day. This international charity has a local ‘huis’ in Leiden which has strong links with the school.

This year, students, staff and parents have managed to raise an impressive €12,500!

Each BSN school chooses to raise money in different ways – although the popular idea of a ‘Wear What U Want Day’ was in evidence on every site. Each student made a financial contribution to be allowed to forget their school uniform for a day - Foundation School children came dressed as superheroes and princesses, children and staff at Diamanthorst wore ‘crazy clothes’ and Junior School Vlaskamp students were to be seen in nothing but stripes and spots.

But that was not all – students and staff organised a huge variety of activities – here are just a few:

  • Cake and bake sales (JSD, JSV, SS)
  • Concierges persuaded car and bus drivers arriving at school to part with their cash (SS)
  • Bring and Buy sale of children’s DVDs, videos, tapes and CDs (FS)
  • Mr. Tong, baked and donated 'the ultimate chocolate cake' and staff bid for a slice! (JSV)
  • Buckets to collect loose change from Business Unit staff and visitors (FS)
  • Student musicians busked for donations (JSD)
  • A special Saturday Fun Run around the Senior School (JSD)

But the highlight of all the fundraising initiatives was undoubtedly the ever popular ‘B.S.N. does Fame Academy’.  This evening event raised a huge chunk of this money on ticket sales for the concert, Pudsey’s Auction, Christmas Hamper Sales, and bar takings. The audience was able to vote for their favourite singers – but at a cost! The votes cost 50c each (or 3 for €1) and over 5,000 were counted this year, quite a few being for Flo Morgan in Year 7 who was this year’s winner.

Well done to everyone in all the schools that got involved and took the time to make a difference – €12,500 is an amazing total!
