GISGA 2009

The BSN Gymnastics Teams had some creditable results at this year's GISGA event at Tormead School in Guildford. Students from Year 4 through to Year 13 represented us in the UK.

The BSN Gymnastics team recently competed in the GISGA 2009 competition in the UK.
This major national competition attracts gymnasts of the highest level and is the most prestigious event in the Independent Schools gymnastics calendar.

The U19 team in particular excelled themselves, each coming home with two medals – overall 5th, and a 6th in the Group Sequence competition. GISGA is literally oozing with national squad and topsport gymnasts, and many train upwards of 15 hours a week. All girls in the BSN U19 team have come up through the ranks here at the BSN and are justifiably proud of their achievement.  A special mention should go to Iona Cumming who flew into England on Saturday night after being in Vienna for the ISST basketball. That’s loyalty.

A special mention too for Francesca Turner (Under 11 gymnast), who is now training at 'topsport' level with Pro Patria (Zoetermeer). Her club insisted she come back for a competition on Sunday, so Fran, in order still to be able to represent the school competed instead for our U13s on Saturday (the U11 competition being on the Sunday). Once again, that’s loyalty.

The summary gives only the headlines to the full story, which will tell of personal triumphs and moments of despair. Elli Graves was competing in her last and arguably her best GISGA. Several Juniors were in their first. The girls all shared in the successes, and all felt the despair.

Now working at Tormead is Vikki Oliver, our top gymnast in the early 80’s. Some may remember her. On her final teaching practice in the Tormead PE department this term is Kathryn Finch. They were both part of the organising team. We must mention Stephanie Abbott, who left us two years ago, now at Kent College, who was 6th overall in the U19s. Johanna Murphy, who also left us two years ago, now at Port Regis School, was 20th overall in the Under 10s. Other former BSN families turned up to support us – it was a real BSN reunion.

All in all another exciting and successful event during which all gymnasts were a credit to the BSN - their hard work and dedication was worth it. Thanks also to the parents and coaches who went over to England to support the girls.
