Iron Giant invades JSD atrium.
There was only one topic of conversation on the playground last Friday afternoon; the giagantic Iron Man that had appeared in the school atrium.
Year 4 at JSD have spent the last few weeks reading Ted Hughes' Iron Man. The children have written diary extracts from the point of view of various characters in the story, poems about the Iron Man living in the scrapyard, newspaper articles about the battle between the iron man and the space-bat-angel as well as creating performance poetry and works of art.
The 'piece de resistance' was the gigantic three dimensional Iron Man in the atrium. The children constructed him from cardboard boxes that were glued, taped and stapled together before covering the whole structure in aluminium foil; 9 rolls in all! Both classes worked together to create their masterpiece in one day and the class teachers braved the tallest step ladder in school to fit his head.
Many children in the school were asking where the missing ear was. I am glad to report that the seagull that stole it from the Iron Man is now circling around his head clutching the aforementioned ear. Many thanks to Otto de Koning for making the seagull over the weekend.
