Rode Kruis - Meet and Greet
On the afternoon of Saturday 24th of January, 52 pensioners from the vicinity of our school came to the BSN as part of the Meet & Greet scheme in the Netherlands, organised by the Rode Kruis of Voorschoten.
It was a pleasant opportunity for our students to link with the elderly people of Voorschoten and to provide good company for any lonely ones among them.
Students had to begin work prior to the day of the event by wrapping chocolates and arranging beautiful decorations for the tables. In addition, many Year 11 students had an early start on Saturday coming in to school to make preparations for the arrival of our guests.
Students had several different tasks, for example making delicious scones and sandwiches, to give our guests an idea of the traditional English high tea. Year 11s also had to set tables, serve the food and drinks and many proved their wonderful social skills by having fascinating conversations with our visitors in which they also learned about local Dutch history.
There was some impressive entertainment provided by the students, which also showed some of the school’s range of musical talent. PowerPoint presentations were also shown at the beginning of the day, welcoming our visitors warmly to the occasion. At the end of the day another presentation was made sending off our visitors.
During the day some students kindly provided our guests with detailed tours of our school to give our neighbours more of an insight into our daily activities.
The day was a great success, forming a bond between the elderly and youthful people of Voorschoten. The day ended on a positive note, with our visitors leaving with smiles on their faces but at the same time, our students leaving with a sense of accomplishment. All in all this is a day that won’t be forgotten.
