Science Day at the Foundation School

previous next

Science Day was a huge success with all the F1 and F2 children experimenting, having fun and working with older students from the Junior Schools.

On Thursday 7th May the Foundation School had their second Science Day. The Year 6 children from Ms Grant's Class at JSV came and helped the children to understand more about science. Mr Gamble from Diamonthorst School did some crazy experiments with the F2 children (covering most of them in exploding cola!) and Ms Grant from Vlaskamp trapped our F1 children in giant bubbles!

The Foundation 1 children explored the wonders of light and dark. They investigated a variety of objects and materials, by using all of their senses. They observed, talked and asked questions whilst being encouraged to use trial and error to explain the things around them. They planted their very own seeds and explored mini-beasts.

The Foundation 2 children became little scientists and each classroom was equipped with an array of experiments from electronics, tricks of light and chemical reactions to air, movement and sound to name but a few! The Foundation 2 children were encouraged to examine and predict the results of their experiments. They had great fun and it was a lovely initiation to the world around them.

Science is a very important part of a child’s development in the Foundation Stage. By encouraging the children to use and develop skills such as questioning, describing, sorting, matching and observing, we can support the individual children to make sense of the world around them. Their curiosity, cooperation and perseverance will develop and they will develop a skill which will enable them to discover more about their environment. This is something we are very passionate about at the Foundation School.
