The British School in The Netherlands acts as a focal point for a large section of the local expatriate community. This community (due to its international nature) comes to rely on the school in a greater way than an average community would rely on its ‘local’ school. The large geographical spread of parents and international friends can make it hard to find suitable meeting places and facilities for expatriate activities which are suitable and convenient for all.
The BSN has an important role to play in the provision of facilities and services to both the international community and the Dutch community as a whole. Due to the nature of a school’s opening hours, high quality buildings and facilities can at times lay unused and thus offer potential for evening, weekend and holiday use. The rental of BSN property provides not only a source of additional income for the school, but acts as a public service to the community.
The Community Services department of the BSN aims to provide a service whereby the school’s facilities can be made available to individuals and organisations for educational, recreational, social or civic purposes (thus enriching the educational and cultural life of students and parents through their involvement in such groups).
The Community Services department will endeavour to ensure that any such use of the buildings will support, but not interfere with the regular programs and activities of the school. School activities take precedence over rental activities unless an existing rental agreement is in order.
Use of facilities will be required to comply with all school policies and all applicable local statutes and will be limited to those activities requiring normal utilisation of the space. Usage that would result in excessive wear and tear will not be approved and all groups are responsible for lost, stolen, or broken equipment and any damage to the facilities.
