We all agree that we can speak of a tradition – the wheelchair walk involving students in Year 12 and residents of the home for the elderly Foreschate-Topaz has become an annual event. This year the group celebrated the 5th wheelchair walk which has been aptly renamed Generation Walk.

The Generation Walk took place over two days on 28th and 30th September. The group walked via Theehuis Jansland on Wednesday to sample their coffee and cake and on Friday the students gave the elderly a tour of the ground floor of the Senior School. The residents of the care home were amazed at the Student Cafe, the Astroturf and the newly furbished Food Technology suite.

As it was the 5th anniversary, the whole group were welcomed back to the home by the band Harmonie Jong Laurentius as well as Councillor Nieuwenhuizen and the manager of Foreschate-Topaz Andre van Zuijlen. The Councillor said: “I am proud of the pupils from The British School in the Netherlands. It’s fabulous that they dedicate themselves to an activity such as this. We are very grateful.”

This year both A level and IB students took part. The Generation Walk is compulsory for Year 12 IBDP, but an A-level student took part anyway He said :“I don’t get any credits for it, but just volunteered because I thought it would be nice to do something for the local community. At times communication was tricky but we got the message across in the end.” An IB student added: “It’s a pleasure to do something for our older generation. Our school is so close and it’s just a small gesture.”

After the music, the residents were treated to a High Tea prepared by the students. Three residents were given a special gift and large balloon, as they too were celebrating an anniversary – their 5th time on the wheelchair walk.
