A group of hardworking student reporters transformed the Boerderij into a bustling newsroom for BBC School Report News Day on 15 March.

Armed with BBC Press Passes, their Microsoft Surface Pros, and all the recording and photography equipment they could need, students set out to report on stories relevant to both SSV and the world at large. From pitching ideas to researching, conducting interviews, adding media, writing and editing, the students took ownership of every step in the process of publishing news.

The day began with a “News in One Hour” challenge. Students were tasked with creating a news article in under an hour that was well-written and engaging to their audience. For the rest of the day, groups of reporters created an article on a topic of their choosing, many of which featured interviews with students and staff, original videos, podcasts and photographs they created throughout the day. Reporters produced articulate and eloquent pieces spanning a broad array of topics, from the Time’s Up movement to pizza, from Equality Week to our reliance on technology.

The theme for this year’s BBC School Report was “Fake News”, a topic that has been featuring prominently around the world. Students were encouraged to question the validity of the ‘news’ they read, examining sources and think critically about opinion verses fact. BSN student reporters carried out a study on fake news, which can be read here on the BBC School Report Blog.

The dedicated group of student reporters and editors worked incredibly hard throughout the day to produce high-quality content and meet their publishing deadlines. Thank you to all of the students involved, as well as the teachers and staff, for their time and dedication to making this day a success.
