Music

There are a number of well-documented academic benefits to studying music and children who take lessons on an instrument at a young age stimulate the brain in a unique way.

Instrumental Lessons | ABRSM Exams | Music in the Community

There are many opportunities for students to become involved with music - through the junior and senior curriculum as well as a Co-Curricular Activity and have many opportunities to perform.

Music is taught by specialist teachers from the moment the children start school and it soon forms an integral part of school life. Students of all ages have the opportunity to become involved in choirs, orchestras, bands and ensembles, with regular concerts being organised to enable students to perform. Each junior school has acoustically designed music rooms and an impressive range of musical instruments and equipment at their disposal.

Senior School students benefit from an extensive music technology suite - with individual terminals and keyboards for composition and music technology work, a modern fully equipped recording studio and practice rooms for instrumental teaching. All students in Years 7 to 9 receive music lessons and a considerable number then elect to continue with the subject for GCSE and beyond.

Instrumental Lessons

The BSN runs a comprehensive instrumental lessons programme. Specialist teachers are employed by the school and work across all four campuses, with lessons taking place during the school day and after school into the evening.

Tuition is available on a diverse range of instruments, and students having their lessons at the BSN are also entitled to additional theory lessons following the ABRSM syllabus.

The fees for the instrumental lessons are payable on a termly basis; invoices are sent via email to parents by the Music Administrator at each school.

ABRSM Exams

Students are encouraged to take their music-making as far as possible and have the opportunity to take ABRSM music exams. The BSN is the main ABRSM exam centre in The Netherlands.

There are varied ensembles which meet and rehearsing throughout the week at all schools, both during and after school - all provide a great opportunity for students to collaborate on performances and work together in a relaxed and fun but stimulating environment.

The clubs, groups and ensembles currently available include:

  • BSN Strings
  • Concert Band
  • Flute Choir
  • Junior Choirs
  • Orchestra
  • Performance Choir
  • Progress Band
  • Recorder Club
  • Senior Choir
  • Shine
  • Showstoppers
  • Swing Band

Music in the community

We have strong musical links with the local community. The BSN Community Choir - made up of staff, students and parents from across the BSN - rehearse every Wednesday and has taken part in a number of large-scale performances.

Summer Concert 2016

All our schools also take music into the local Dutch community, especially during the Christmas period.  Children from the junior schools go into residential homes for the elderly to perform or sing traditional carols for Dutch children in local schools while the Senior School Choir and Swing Band performs on stage in local shopping centres to raise money for charity.

We also run workshops for students, parents and staff, most recently with Laudamus, a choir from the UK, who came to do a workshop and joint concert with the Senior Choir and Senior Performance Choir.
