How collaborative problem solving is helping JSD students with their reading and writing skills

Curriculum

Developing writing continues to be an important focus at JSD, this year. Our Year 1 pupils began their first writing unit of the year with a collaborative problem solving activity. In teams, the pupils had to search our grounds for clues to locate a missing toy. The clues, which were all linked to their new text, encouraged the pupils to read and spell.

Further up the school, pupils are also exploring their new units, with Y5 writing instructions for each other to make jam sandwiches (some which ended up with slightly unconventional sandwiches) and Y6  have begun to explore figurative language in Shakespeare’s Much Ado About Nothing.
