Sixth Form

Last week Monday, September 23rd, the British Schoool in the Netherlands' Year 12 IBDP students had the opportunity to partake in the 8th Generation Walk as part of their first Creativity Activity & Service (CAS) programme Service event of the year.

CAS forms part of their International Baccalaureate study and is the opportunity for students to learn through their acts.  The Generation Walk is an opportunity for our students to engage with the local community at Forechate Home in Voorschoten.  Students and the Residents exchanged stories and the conversation was an important chance for them to feel connected to the community.

Students spent an afternoon learning how wheelchairs work, with a second afternoon walking the residents from the home to our school.  Here, the students served them appletaart (Traditional Dutch apple tart) and coffee or tea.  Much of the conversation was conducted in Dutch and allowed our students the opportunity to extend their Dutch skills.  Following the lovely tea break, our students took the residents on a tour of their campus, showing them some of the classes they get taught in.  All in, this was a very successful (and as the Dutch would say: ‘gezellig’), afternoon and we hope to extend our relationship with the home in other events this year.

Some of the students also had the opportunity to record a few of the stories told by the residents and which we hope to publish in the local newspaper, Voorschotense Krant.
