Performing Arts Week 2018

Music / Performance Performance

The theme of this year's Performing Arts Week at the BSN was one of togetherness - students, teachers, parents and staff from all four campuses coming together to make music and art.

On Choir Day, the concert choirs from all four campuses met at JSV to debut brand new music for the Junior School Gala at the end of the term. Instrumental Day brought instrumentalists from each campus together for the same goal. Both days had a wonderful spirit of collaboration and excitement, as our student musicians were eager to begin practice on their new music for the term.

A wonderful moment came at JSL, where all of the students and their teachers (over 500 voices!) gathered in the hall to join in singing the school song. It is a rare moment that the entire school can sing together, and it made for a very special experience, both for students and teachers. Watch the video here

Parents and teachers in the JSL community also joined in on the performances, giving a concert for students and showing off some hidden talents! It was inspiring for the student musicians to see their parents and teachers get up in front of the group to give performances, and some students even joined in alongside.

A major announcement this week from the BSN Music Departments is the launch of BSN Sessions, the official record label of the BSN. This project will allow students at all four campuses to create, record, produce and distribute their own music on major platforms, such as iTunes and Spotify. Bringing music out of the classroom and into the real-world, students will learn real-life music industry skills, and even have a chance to collaborate with music technology students and those interested in business and marketing in the process of releasing original music. The first track on BSN Sessions, an original piece by a Year 13 IB music student at SSV, was released this week. For more information, visit our Performing Arts Voices blog here

Throughout the week, students had an opportunity to sign up for busking in the hallway during drop-off, pick-up and class breaks. Together with proceeds from the Concert Choir CD's that were available to purchase, these performances raised money for Chickenshed, a UK-based theatre company that promotes inclusive theatre as a tool for changing minds and changing lives, they offer a chance for children who might never have been able to study the preforming arts to join a community of supportive, creative people and expand their talents.

Performing Arts Week showcased the talents of the students and adults in the BSN Community, as well as promoted the importance of the Performing Arts in schools as a way to bring students together and share their talents with others.
