On 19 October, NASA Astronaut Steve L. Smith visited all four BSN campuses. Children and staff were excited for the opportunity to meet the four-time space traveler, and Mr Smith was kind and patient enough to greet, take photos and sign autographs for everyone who approached him.

During his presentations he answered questions from the audience about his experience in space. He talked about routine tasks such as eating, sleeping or using the bathroom and how they require an entirely different approach while in the International Space Station.

Mr. Smith also gave advice to the audience based on what he has learned from his time applying to become an astronaut, and during his tenure as an astronaut. After four rejections from NASA, he was finally accepted into the astronaut programme, so he encouraged students to not give up or let obstacles stop them from achieving their dreams. That success does not depend on how you look or where you come from - what matters is on the inside. He also said that it’s important to have a firm handshake and look people in the eyes, and, of course, always arrive on time.

In his last takeaway, he urged girls to pursue STEM careers because “we need more women in space”.

Great guidance from such an accomplished professional! Thank you to Mr Smith and the staff who helped coordinate his visit. We feel confident that he inspired many during his visit.

Check out the photos from the day to see Mr Smith in action at the BSN.
