Junior Charity

Two Junior School Leidschenveen (JSL) students, Isabela Burger (Year 5) and Nelly (Year 6), recently led their own charity collection to raise money for Stichting AAP (Stichting Apen Adoptie en Protectie / Monkey Adoption and Protection Foundation), earning them both their ‘Responsible Citizen Gold Award’.

Isabela started the project before she and her family relocated last year, and Nelly then took up the cause. The initiative involved collecting old electronic devices, such as phones, laptops and tablets, to go to an organisation that sells the usable parts. Isabela gave presentations to class parent representatives and shared her ideas in assemblies at Junior School Leidschenveen and Senior School Leidschenveen.

The money they have raised through their collection will directly benefit animals in need through Stichting AAP.

Stichting AAP is a Dutch charity that helps animals such as monkeys, tigers and lions that are kept as pets, illegally traded or used in circuses or as other forms of entertainment.

This causes an unimaginable amount of animal suffering and Stichting AAP believes that this must stop!”

Responsible Citizen Award Club at JSL

The Responsible Citizen Award Club at Junior School Leidschenveen gives students the opportunity to show what they can do, encourages them to try new things and helps them understand what is important about being part of a community – teaching them about what it truly means to be a responsible, global citizen. Students have a number of categories to choose from, including Creating and Crafting, Digital Responsibility and Environmentally Aware and can work towards achieving their Bronze, Silver and Gold Awards.

Isabela and Nelly successfully completed the 18 tasks needed to achieve their Gold Award, with their collection for Stichting AAP as their ‘Gold Level’ project!

Helping Animals in Need

Nelly on their initiative: “For a special project to achieve my Gold Award for Responsible Citizens, I helped to organise the collection of old digital devices, telephones and tablets for Stichting AAP. I took over from Isabela, another JSL student who initiated this project but moved to Dubai before the collection took place.

They came to collect the box, and the money raised will go towards helping Stichting AAP achieve their goal of putting an end to the suffering of exotic animals in Europe.”

Building a Better World

Deputy Headteacher at Junior School Leidschenveen, Jonny Clarke, commented on the girls' efforts:

We are extremely proud of both Isabela and Nelly for all the hard work they put in both before and during their collection initiative for Stichting AAP.

“With this, they completed their Gold Level Projects, and both girls achieved their Responsible Citizen Gold Awards here at JSL. These are well-deserved awards – both girls consistently demonstrated perseverance and determination over several years, completing eighteen Responsible Citizen tasks in total to achieve these awards. I am sure that these are just the start of other fantastic charitable and generous efforts that they will both be involved with, wherever they are in the world. Thank you, girls!”

Congratulations, Isabela and Nelly, on your wonderful initiative to raise money for Stichting AAP and achieving your Gold Awards! Thank you to everyone who contributed to Isabela and Nelly's collection.
